About the Role

Brookville Center for Children's Services, Inc. is seeking a Special Education Teacher II for its Barbara C. Wilson Preschool. This role involves evaluating and providing special education services to assigned children, overseeing teacher assistants and aides, and communicating with families. The position requires increasing professional knowledge and may involve evening meetings.

Responsibilities

• Implement curriculum based on children’s individualized needs and ensure classroom health and safety.
• Plan daily lessons for large and small group activities aligned with IEP goals.
• Screen incoming children and prepare educational observation forms.
• Complete annual updates for each child, including performance levels and goals.
• Attend case conferences (CPSE/CSE) to coordinate therapeutic and educational interventions.
• Communicate child progress to parents in writing, by phone, and in person.
• Establish and implement appropriate education strategies to meet student needs.
• Perform related duties as required.
• Evaluate assigned children.
• Address significant behavioral situations using positive reinforcement and behavioral management plans.
• Maintain data for each IEP goal.
• Perform daily small and large group activities.
• Comply with state regulations for students, including daily logs, attendance, progress reports, and annual reports.
• Complete plan books at least two weeks in advance.
• Complete and update substitute kits within two weeks of school start.
• Submit quarterly progress reports for each child.
• Impart information regarding child’s function and progress.
• Inform classroom staff and team members of each child’s priority goals for classroom activities.
• Follow up on concerns raised by team members.
• Update IEP goals.
• Outline and demonstrate individualized strategies to achieve objectives.
• Provide or adapt materials to facilitate language and speech production.
• Integrate information and strategies from team members and other professionals.
• Oversee and manage assigned teacher assistant/aides in all areas of educational day.
• Ensure the health and safety of the classroom environment.
• Establish effective communication with parents of assigned children.
• Conduct weekly meetings with classroom staff.
• Comply with daycare license regulations, SED regulations, and agency policies.
• Clearly post allergies and medication information for each student and ensure staff are informed.
• Evaluate teacher aides/assistants in the classroom.
• Cooperate and conduct oneself appropriately in an educational setting.
• Adhere to program-specific policies and procedures.
• Participate in program-wide activities.
• Participate in activities and seek support to enhance knowledge relevant to assigned class and program.
• Assist student teachers in developing effective educator skills.
• Attend and participate in required in-services.
• Attend and participate in supervisory sessions as requested.
• Be proficient in administering standardized testing to assess student ability levels.
• Lead IDT meetings with students' parents and therapists to discuss progress, strategies, behaviors, updates, concerns, and medical information.
• Adhere to general policies of the organization/regulators, including Code of Ethical Conduct, emergency preparedness, fire/safety protocols, in-service education, policies and procedures, self-development activities, and infection control practices.
• Demonstrate understanding of the needs of children and visitors for each specific age group.
• Address safety and psychological needs of special age groups.
• Address the needs of special groups, including hearing impaired and physically challenged individuals.
• Maintain child and family confidentiality.
• Be courteous and considerate in interactions with children and others.

Requirements

• Master's Degree required.
• New York State Certification in Students with Disabilities (Birth – Grade 2) or in Students with Disabilities (All Grades) is required.
• Knowledge of Early Childhood Education preferred.
• Minimum one (1) year related experience to plan individual education plans to meet the special needs of each child preferred.
• Prior special education teaching experience preferred.
• Physical aspects may include but are not limited to lifting and transferring of a student.
