About the Role
Arlo is rebuilding health insurance for small businesses by making sure as much of every premium dollar as possible goes to care instead of getting absorbed by the system around it. AI is the foundation that makes this work, used across underwriting, operations, clinical programs, and member experience. We are hiring a Senior Data Scientist to own our underwriting model and deploy measurable improvements based on real-world outcomes. You will work with billions of claims to identify signals that predict future medical cost and how to roll them up to a competitive price for a group, deploying the system at scale.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate the existing Arlo underwriting model and identify areas for improvement.
- Develop a robust evaluation framework to stress model outcomes and identify specific gaps in risk estimates and underlying causal factors.
- Generate a roadmap of model and feature work prioritized for competitive rates and business profitability.
- Build features that capture the full risk of a member.
- Account for training and inference dataset bias to optimize member predictions.
- Improve handling of member cost variance in the quoting pipeline.
- Experiment with model designs, implementing ML architectures that balance efficacy, generalizability, and understanding.
- Measure the effect of every model change on MLR and competitiveness using the backtesting harness.
- Set standards for model improvement and ensure changes are trustworthy.
Requirements
- 5+ years as a data scientist building predictive models that made it into production.
- Deep proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Comfort processing large datasets using Spark and common modeling packages.
- A track record of owning a problem end-to-end in an ambiguous environment and shipping without a spec.
- Direct experience with healthcare data.
- Strong instincts for feature engineering and model validation.
- Judgment of how well results will hold in production.
- Interest in the larger business context; the model directly impacts win rates, book size, and performance.
- Clear communicator who can explain their work and its significance.
