About the Role

Requires a strong understanding of ophthalmic practice, ocular diseases, treatments, and pharmacology. The role demands excellent critical thinking, patient care, and knowledge of medical instrumentation. Effective communication with patients and colleagues is essential, along with a willingness to be flexible and efficient.

Responsibilities

• Possess basic contact lens knowledge and the ability to insert and remove contact lenses.
• Educate and train patients on contact lens insertion, removal, and proper care.
• Understand in-office procedures across all ophthalmic sub-specialties.
• Assist physicians with in-office procedures including lasers, corneal procedures, injections, and ocular plastic procedures.
• Perform subjective manifest refraction using a manual phoropter to measure refractive error and obtain best corrective visual acuity.
• Work with both plus and minus cylinders.
• Transcribe patient history and examination findings during physician encounters.
• Document physician impressions, plans, test results, prescriptions, and orders under physician direction.
• Understand and perform automatic and manual measurements of the eyes.
• Perform clerical duties such as surgical scheduling, prior authorizations, coordinating surgeries, and ordering IOL lenses.
• Train new employees.
• Perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

• 1-2 years of experience working within an ophthalmic practice with an optometrist and/or ophthalmologist as an ophthalmic assistant.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience with 1 year of closely related clinical experience.
• Obtain JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant within 6-12 months of hire.
