About the Role
The Technical Designer is responsible for technical innovation, integration, documentation, and execution of architectural and engineering design intent, aligning with the project's scope, program, and budget. They co-lead projects daily with senior staff, focusing on design development through construction administration, code review, material research, specifications, and documentation quality control.
Responsibilities
- Contributes to technical resolution and innovation, advancing architectural projects through all phases consistent with scope and firm goals.
- Integrates criteria and input from all disciplines into design solutions.
- Communicates and maintains quality standards for documentation products for internal and external teams.
- Leads the implementation of the Quality Management System for assigned projects.
- Leads the research, review, and analysis of applicable codes, providing parameters and restrictions early in the design process.
- Proposes and assesses construction and building systems.
- Collaborates with the High Performance Design Group in tracking energy, water, and carbon use intensities and provides documentation for AIA 2030 reporting (where a Project Architect is not present).
- Leads design and construction documentation, including vignettes, animations, drawings, and specifications, ensuring consistency with firm standards.
- Develops, coordinates, and reviews technical specifications for the project.
- Fosters positive relationships with clients and the design community.
- Works within established project budgets and schedules.
- Works with the Digital Design Coordinator to implement the computer management program for the project (when required).
- Leads construction phase services, including site visits, mockup reviews, and shop drawing reviews for design intent.
- Participates in the interview and selection process of contractors, where appropriate.
- Attends and presents in owner/architect design meetings and owner/architect/contractor meetings, reviewing and approving meeting minutes.
- Attends and facilitates weekly internal project team meetings.
- Actively participates in local and firm-wide Technical Meetings and contributes to advancement activities.
- Actively leads a project team.
- Directly supervises, trains, and mentors team members.
- Engages in talent strategy through resume review and interviews to find specialists, leaders, and future professionals.
- Demonstrates leadership in implementing sustainable strategies and developing staff knowledge.
- Creates and drives new ways of working by contributing to the development of services, standards, and procedures based on business principles that protect SOM from financial and legal risk.
Requirements
- Completion of a professional degree in Architecture or a related field.
- Licensed in Architecture.
- Minimum 8 years of experience or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- General understanding of sustainable strategies and principles.
- Familiarity with LEED or other green building rating systems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Portfolios must be submitted for all design and project management positions.
