About the Role

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join its Enterprise Solutions (ES) team in Boston. This role will lead the design and implementation of scalable, cloud-native solutions, influencing architectural decisions, mentoring teams, and contributing to the company's digital transformation. The ideal candidate has a hands-on, solution-oriented mindset, a strong product focus, and thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

Design reusable, scalable, and customer-focused capabilities with a product engineering mindset.
Lead the design and development of scalable, cloud-native applications on Microsoft Azure.
Utilize AI-assisted development tools to enhance engineering productivity while maintaining review, security, and compliance practices.
Lead front-end engineering efforts using Angular or React to create responsive and user-friendly interfaces.
Design and fine-tune database architectures for performance, scalability, data integrity, and security using SQL Server and ORM tools.
Operate within an empowered engineering environment focused on impactful problem-solving.
Partner with enterprise architects and product managers to translate requirements into software components.
Own the complete software development lifecycle, emphasizing test-driven development, secure coding, and maintainability.
Assess and adopt modern frameworks and tools to improve development velocity, system scalability, and operational resilience.
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams, conduct code reviews, and champion best practices.
Communicate architectural decisions and technical strategies to the Enterprise Architecture Review Board.
Proactively identify and resolve system performance issues, architectural inefficiencies, and reliability concerns.
Develop and maintain detailed documentation for system architecture, development workflows, and operational procedures.
Uphold compliance with cybersecurity protocols, data governance standards, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

10+ years of progressive, hands-on experience in software engineering and system administration, with a strong track record of delivering enterprise-grade solutions.
Proven success in a Principal Engineer or equivalent leadership role, with deep expertise in designing and building scalable applications and integrating third-party platforms.
Strong product mindset, with the ability to translate business problems into reusable technical capabilities.
Extensive experience in cloud-first and service-oriented architectures (SOA), focusing on resilient, distributed systems.
Advanced proficiency in C# and the .NET ecosystem, including .NET Core and ASP.NET.
Strong front-end development experience using Angular (latest versions).
Experience using AI coding assistants or modern development accelerators is preferred.
Deep knowledge of relational databases, particularly SQL Server, including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning.
Hands-on expertise with Microsoft Azure services, including Azure Functions, App Services, Azure SQL, and Azure Storage.
Comprehensive understanding of microservices architecture, including inter-service communication, message queues, and orchestration strategies.
Strong foundation in system design and architectural patterns.
Technically versatile with a hands-on approach across the full software development lifecycle.
Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with experience collaborating across distributed teams and engaging with stakeholders.
Business-oriented mindset, with the ability to align technical solutions with business objectives.
Familiarity with the Property & Casualty Insurance industry is advantageous.
Self-motivated and collaborative, with a strong sense of ownership, adaptability, and a team-first mentality.
