About the Role
Support research projects at the Center for the Study of Los Angeles (StudyLA), gain training and mentorship in social science research, and prepare for graduate study. Assist in the design, implementation, and analysis of research projects, including surveys and community initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Support StudyLA's mission to assist students, staff, and faculty in becoming agents for social justice.
- Assist senior leadership in planning, programming, and executing research projects and related activities.
- Gather and organize project-related information.
- Assist with data/information collection, management, and reporting.
- Perform basic quantitative and qualitative data analysis under guidance.
- Contribute to research reports, presentations, and written materials.
- Expand relationships within the university, Los Angeles community, and other academic and relevant organizations.
- Increase awareness of StudyLA research and promote the use of StudyLA data.
- Represent StudyLA at professional activities and meetings.
- Manage multiple assignments and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity, leadership, professionalism, and sound decision-making.
- Work respectfully with people from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Perform other related duties.
Requirements
- Typically a bachelor’s degree in political science, sociology, urban studies, public policy, or related field.
- Recent LMU graduate (within two years of graduation).
- Demonstrated interest in pursuing graduate study.
- Strong interest in social science research, public opinion, and/or community-based research.
- Basic familiarity with research methods and data analysis (coursework acceptable).
- Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to follow through on tasks.
- Inspires new ideas and fresh approaches.
- High energy and passion for the LMU and StudyLA missions.
- Flexible and adaptable style.
- Ability to be proactive and anticipate needs.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent writing, grammar, proofreading, and punctuation skills.
- Ability to perform duties with speed and accuracy.
- Understands modern office practices, procedures, and equipment use.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work independently and as a team player.
- One-year, full-time commitment to work with StudyLA.
- Participation in regular mentorship meetings.
- Active engagement in research projects and skill development.
- Commitment to applying to graduate or professional programs during the fellowship year.
- Participation in service activities aligned with LMU’s mission.
