About the Role
Open Door Legal is seeking an Affirmative Housing Attorney to join their growing team. This role will work collaboratively with the housing team and clients to ensure the rights of San Francisco low-income residents to safe and healthy homes. The housing practice team is the largest at the organization, with the Affirmative Housing team focusing on issues such as housing discrimination, illegal rent increases, landlord harassment, and habitability.
Responsibilities
- Embody the mission of universal access to civil legal aid and work with the team to ensure affirmative housing needs are met.
- Maintain a full caseload, opening and closing cases efficiently.
- Facilitate housing and brief service intakes across multiple office locations and virtually.
- Represent clients at SF Superior Court, SF Rent Board hearings, SFHA administrative hearings, grievance hearings, and mediations.
- Provide services and support to low-income clients with sensitivity to cultural, socio-economic, and disability differences.
- Maintain a high rating in the client feedback survey.
- Utilize Salesforce to document case activities, maintain accurate client records, and ensure timely updates.
- Lead in representing the mission and values externally and internally.
Requirements
- Membership in good standing with the California State Bar.
- At least 1 year of experience in tenant-side housing law or a similar field.
- Strong time management skills and ability to handle quick timelines and diverse activities.
- Active demonstration of cultural humility and sensitivity to barriers faced by low-income San Franciscans.
- Demonstrated understanding of providing trauma-informed advocacy for clients in crisis.
- Genuine motivation for working with low-income clients and competence with clients impacted by trauma.
- Minimum of three days in-office per week.
- High level of comfort learning and using technology and cloud-based case management systems (Salesforce, Dropbox, Google Suite).
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
