About the Role
The Graphics Intensive is a unique 12-week, full-time program for mission-driven students and early career professionals with visual skills to work alongside journalists. It aims to cultivate skills and judgment in creating visual stories, offering training and feedback. The program is designed for individuals interested in applying creative and technical skills to journalistic and storytelling assignments.
Responsibilities
- Produce visual and data-based multimedia journalism under close guidance.
- Design and build graphics and visual forms using web-based markup and coding languages.
- Participate in training sessions.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom.
- Complete work assignments based on team needs and news demands.
- Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and commitment to the company's mission.
Requirements
- 1+ year of demonstrated strong performance toward an undergraduate degree, or relevant professional experience.
- 2+ years of experience working with graphics tools and software (e.g., D3.js, R, JavaScript, Python, HTML/CSS, GIS, 3-D modeling software).
- Interest in data visualization, cartography, or other forms of visual journalism.
- Skill in interface design and information graphic design.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator) or design tools like Figma.
- A portfolio demonstrating experience with news graphics or interactive visualizations.
- News or visual internships or equivalent experience.
- Curiosity and interest in the news, and in finding innovative approaches to telling stories.
- Experience working independently, meeting deadlines, and being attentive to detail in a high-pressure newsroom environment.
- Experience working collaboratively with a team with diverse creative skills.
- Available to work some nights, weekends, and holidays as the news cycle demands.
- Experience multitasking, prioritizing, and balancing multiple projects in a dynamic work environment.
- Interest in professional growth and openness to professional feedback.
