About the Role
The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) is seeking Co-op Preservation Project Associates to work with affordable housing co-op residents to protect and strengthen their housing. This role is ideal for candidates passionate about housing justice, eager to learn about affordable cooperative housing models, and who can communicate effectively with a diverse resident population. Bilingual English/Spanish applicants are prioritized due to the significant number of Spanish-speaking residents served.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical assistance and referrals to HDFC co-ops, city-owned buildings converting to cooperatives, or Mitchell Lama Cooperatives.
- Assist boards of directors and shareholders in organizing effectively to improve co-op performance by identifying problems, clarifying goals, and implementing plans.
- Attend in-person meetings (often in the evening) and virtual meetings with co-op residents and leaders as needed.
- Monitor and facilitate elections of co-op boards.
- Provide financial planning support, including budget creation and loan packaging.
- Maintain open communication, positive working relationships, and high levels of trust with building leaders and residents.
- Create reports to track and bill for services provided under supporting contracts.
- Participate in UHAB-wide meetings, committees, and activities to contribute to organizational improvement and promotion.
Requirements
- Ability to fluently speak English and Spanish (preferred).
- Ability to establish productive trust-based relationships with residents and leaders of limited-equity housing cooperatives.
- Ability to establish effective professional relationships with real estate professionals, property managers, bank representatives, and government officials.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Ability to research government regulations and legal documents and interpret them for concerned parties.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and persuasively in speech and writing.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain positive relationships under adversity and pressure.
- Ability to utilize a flexible and creative problem-solving/dispute resolution style.
- Interview will be conducted in English and Spanish for bilingual candidates.

- The department provides free technical assistance to over 1,300 HDFCs and nearly 80 city-owned buildings undergoing co-op conversion.
- The Preservation Monitoring team provides contractual compliance assistance to over 200 HDFCs.
- The Co-op Improvement Program works with residents of distressed co-ops to create remediation work-out plans.
- The Project Associates will work with 37 Mitchell Lama projects across the city providing training and technical assistance.
