About the Role
Join UHN's Laboratory Medicine Program, Canada's largest hospital diagnostic lab and a global leader in academic labs. As an integral member of the Clinical Genetics laboratory team, the ECG Technician/Lab Assistant will perform a variety of pre-analytical support functions under direct supervision.
Responsibilities
- Performing specimen accession, preparation and processing techniques using accepted safety procedures
- Receiving, sorting and processing specimens following established procedures and guidelines
- Preparing, handling and dispensing reagents, medias and solutions, as required
- Preparing specimens referred out to other testing sites
- Performing report handling and statistics collection responsibilities
- Provide support for inventory, supply control and receiving
- Performing other duties related to a clinical genetics laboratory
- Observing and understanding Hospital and departmental policies and procedures
- Adhering to Hospital and departmental mission and value statements while maintaining patient confidentiality
- Performing cross-functional duties, as assigned, or requested
- Performing other duties related to and consistent with the job classification, as required
Requirements
- Completion of high school, or recognized equivalent required
- Demonstrated knowledge of Epic HIS accessioning and requisition entry required
- Effective organizational, time management and prioritization skills required
- Effective verbal and written communication skills required
- Computer literate in Windows based applications required
- Ability to work effectively as a team member required
- Ability to work accurately under stressful conditions required
- Graduate of a post-secondary Laboratory Technician or Laboratory Assistant certificate program, or recognized equivalent strongly preferred
- Registration in good standing with MLPAO (Medical Laboratory Professionals' Association of Ontario) or CSMLS (Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science) strongly preferred
- Minimum one (1) year recent work experience in clinical genetic laboratory setting preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of clinical genetics sample workflow preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of general laboratory equipment maintenance and operation preferred
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Procedures in a laboratory setting preferred
