About the Role
The New York Times is seeking a news assistant to work in a floater role, learning various news assistant positions across the newsroom. This role involves filling in for employees on leave or vacation and covering shifts or projects without assigned staff. Flexibility is key, as schedules vary weekly and include nights, weekends, and holidays, with regular schedule changes.
Responsibilities
- Assist editors in producing multiple newsletters and other online content.
- Handle layout of some parts of our print newspaper.
- Maintain department documents, including listservs with reporter locations.
- Proofread and fact-check audience-related tasks, such as SEO and URL verification.
- Review and confirm background facts for submitted events, identify upcoming events, select events, and edit content for space requirements for publication in listings.
- Determine data accuracy, correct errors, and highlight news developments.
- Manage desk social media accounts under editor direction.
- Write and reword caption information for submitted pictures and material.
- Gather, prepare, and archive content, including tables, listings, captions, summaries, photos, and graphics, reformatting for publication across all media.
- Screen and sort mail, send newspapers, answer calls, and manage incoming information for the assigned department.
- Ensure smooth administrative operation of the assigned desk by performing various tasks under supervision.
- Maintain departmental files and office records, including work and vacation schedules, timebanks, whereabouts lists, and payroll records.
- Assist editors and operations managers with processing freelance and staff payments.
- Learn and use evolving administrative tools and assist in creating and applying newsroom policies.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and the company's mission.
Requirements
- 1+ years of experience with Google Workspace
- 1+ years of experience in a role requiring organizational skills
- 1+ years of experience in a fast-paced environment that requires meeting deadlines
- Strong grammar skills
- Strong communication skills
- Versatile writing skills
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, with an emphasis on InDesign
