About the Role

The Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney for its Buffalo, NY office. This role will assist in developing cases for pro bono referrals and manage a caseload in areas such as divorce, end-of-life planning, name changes, bankruptcies, and estates. VLP is a mixed-model civil legal services program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide full representation, brief service, and advice and counsel in civil practice areas including divorce, end-of-life planning, name changes, bankruptcies, and estates.
  • Prepare cases for referral to pro bono attorneys and provide follow-up.
  • Ensure timely opening and closing of files with appropriate notes and adherence to file maintenance policies.
  • Participate in regular case conferences with Supervisor and unit.
  • Maintain accurate and organized electronic client files using the case management system.
  • Work collaboratively with paralegals, support staff, and interns.
  • Travel as required, necessitating a NYS valid driver's license and vehicle access.
  • Assist in community outreach efforts, including presentations, tabling, and staffing clinics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • JD required.
  • Admitted to practice law in New York State and in good standing.
  • 1-4 years of experience in civil matters.
  • NYS valid driver's license required.
  • Regular access to a vehicle required.
  • Must use and maintain the electronic case management system (Legal Server) and other required technology.
  • Resume and cover letter explaining interest in the position are required.

  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and public-speaking skills.
  • Experience with case management systems (especially Legal Server) and databases are preferred.
