About the Role

The Individualized Afterschool Program Assistant provides dedicated, 1-on-1 and small-group support to youth with special needs, disabilities, or unique learning styles. This role ensures members with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) can safely and fully access high-quality out-of-school time activities through modified materials, behavioral management, and direct personal assistance.

Responsibilities

• Modify, prepare, and explain program activities to support youth with special needs according to their school IEP goals.
• Assist assigned youth with personal needs as required (e.g., lifting, positioning, feeding, and toileting support).
• Develop alternative communication supports (visual schedules, communication devices) and operate needed audio-visual equipment.
• Lead behavioral management interventions, support positive prevention strategies, and assist in maintaining a safe, structured program environment.
• Maintain accurate grant, internal compliance, and assessment records for supported youth.
• Monitor program spaces and restrooms alongside Club staff in alignment with organizational safety rules.
• Render first aid when necessary and immediately report incidents, injuries, or discipline concerns to the Beacon Site Director.

Requirements

• Associate degree or higher OR 48+ college units with a high school diploma
• Experience working with TK–5th grade youth (ages 3–11) in a youth development setting
• Competency supporting youth designated as mild/moderately impaired by an IEP
• Strong positive behavior management, communication, and emergency response skills
• Ability to handle confidential matters and navigate high-paced environments with distractions
• Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification (within 90 days of employment)
• SFUSD Special Education Paraeducator restraint training (within 90 days of employment)
• Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
• Must be able to stand for at least 2 hours consecutively.
• Must be able to stoop and crouch.
• Must be able to sit at a computer workstation for long periods of time.
• Complete LiveScan fingerprinting, a background check, and a tuberculosis (TB) evaluation or test.
