About the Role

This Master's thesis focuses on the manufacturing and characterization of ultra-precision turned mirrors for a VLEO telescope demonstrator. The work involves developing and implementing a suitable manufacturing strategy, focusing on producing optical functional surfaces using ultra-precision turning, and characterizing the mirrors' form accuracy and surface quality.

Responsibilities

  • Familiarization with the optical and manufacturing requirements for the mirrors of the VLEO telescope demonstrator.
  • Development of a suitable manufacturing, clamping, and referencing strategy.
  • Design and production of workpiece holders and auxiliary devices required for mirror processing.
  • Manufacturing of optical functional surfaces using ultra-precision turning.
  • Metrological characterization of the manufactured mirrors regarding form deviation and surface roughness.
  • Verification of geometric interfaces and the integrability of the mirrors into the intended holder.
  • Evaluation of manufacturing results and identification of error sources and optimization potential.

  • Suitable manufacturing strategy needs to be developed and practically implemented.
