About the Role

BluePearl Pet Hospital in Midtown, NY is seeking a Relief Veterinary Assistant to join our Surgery Department. This role involves post-operative client communication and requires the ability to work independently while contributing to team goals.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with nursing care to surgery patients according to hospital standards of care and core values.
  • Perform physical exams, accurately counting heart rate, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.
  • Understand normal vital parameters and alert the doctor when abnormal.
  • Stock, clean, and maintain cleanliness in Surgery and other designated areas.
  • Understand the classification of commonly used medications, associated side effects, and appropriately monitor therapeutic response.
  • Perform radiography and lab work.
  • Engage with clients during appointments, going over estimates and providing discharge instructions.
  • Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in the designated role.
  • Set up intravenous and subcutaneous fluids.
  • Operate all brands of intravenous fluid pumps and troubleshoot errors.
  • Disconnect and connect patients from intravenous fluids aseptically.
  • Monitor patient response to fluid therapy, including signs of overload.
  • Assist during surgical procedures.

Requirements

  • A rotating on-call schedule is required once training has been completed.
  • Prefer to have a minimum of two or more years of experience in a veterinary hospital.
