About the Role

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs specimen collection and laboratory testing across various areas including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, and microbiology. This role ensures accurate and timely results, performs quality control, equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and supports the training of new team members and students.

Responsibilities

• Collect patient specimens.
• Utilize the Information System to receive patients, order and collect samples, result tests, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities and produce reports.
• Perform lab tests in hematology, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank, or microbiology using automated and manual methods according to defined policies and procedures.
• Analyze test results prior to release for validity and accuracy.
• Assure designated turnaround times for results are met and critical results are appropriately reported and documented.
• Perform quality control and proficiency testing procedures as defined by policy.
• Interpret and troubleshoot quality control results to ensure accurate and precise test results.
• Perform preventative maintenance, minor troubleshooting, and calibration of laboratory instrumentation.
• Participate in method and instrument evaluation and implementation.
• Participate in teaching and training of new partners and students.
• Maintain competency in current procedures and gain competency for new methods implemented.

Requirements

• Associate degree in medical laboratory science or military equivalent.
• Must be qualified to perform high complexity testing according to CLIA 493.1489 Standard: Testing personnel qualifications.
• MLT certification within one year of hire or meets CLIA 493.1489 Standard: Testing personnel qualifications on or before April 24, 1995.
• Frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
• Required to talk, hear and smell.
• Occasionally required to walk; sit and reach with hands and arms.
• May occasionally reach overhead to pick up objects or to adjust items.
• May occasionally bend under or crawl under bench to move or obtain objects.
• Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
• Some independent judgment is required, but alternatives are limited by standard practices or procedures.
