About the Role

Riis Settlement seeks experienced, flexible, and student-centered Substitute ESOL instructors to provide on-call coverage for adult ESOL classes. Substitute instructors will deliver in-person instruction during regularly scheduled class times, adapting to existing lesson plans or creating new ones as needed. The role focuses on strengthening English language skills for adult learners to enhance their participation in communities, workplaces, and daily lives.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engaging, student-centered ESOL instruction for adult learners.
  • Follow lesson plans and instructional guidance from the regular instructor.
  • Develop and adapt instructional activities when substitute materials are unavailable or modifications are needed.
  • Facilitate authentic language practice through interactive activities supporting listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • Use a communicative, contextualized approach incorporating relevant topics.
  • Adapt instruction and activities for diverse learning styles, proficiency levels, and student needs.
  • Maintain a welcoming, respectful, and supportive classroom environment.
  • Review and prepare instructional materials prior to assigned classes.
  • Take attendance and complete required classroom documentation.
  • Communicate with program staff regarding classroom activities and student concerns.
  • Assist with student registration and pre- and post-testing activities.
  • Participate in program orientations, meetings, and professional development.
  • Assist with student progress documentation during longer-term substitute assignments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 2+ years relevant teaching experience.
  • Ability to modify/adapt existing lesson plans and curricula or create original lesson plans.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of English grammar with the ability to clearly explain verbs, tenses, and parts of speech.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Advanced computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to interact with diverse immigrant populations and empathize with people of different cultural backgrounds.
  • Ethical and professional conduct.
