About the Role

The Claims Technical Director Casualty is a technical subject matter expert responsible for advancing technical excellence and decision making across high severity, complex, litigated claims. This role provides oversight and strategic guidance on large, complex, and high‑exposure casualty claims. Coaches core liability claim handlers on all aspects of the claim’s lifecycle including coverage, liability, risk transfer, litigation management, exposure evaluation, reserving and negotiation. Ensures consistent application of best practices, supports sound reserving, and drives optimal claim outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a senior technical resource and provide subject matter expertise for complex casualty claims, including auto bodily injury, general liability, premises liability, products liability, and high-exposure lawsuits.
  • Collaborate with and coach assigned core liability claim handlers on claims that meet defined complexity criteria, following the claim as long as needed to support exposure mitigation.
  • Conduct detailed technical reviews of claim files to ensure thorough investigation, accurate liability assessment, and effective litigation strategies to spot claim trends and improve performance.
  • Provide guidance claims handlers on coverage analysis, damages evaluation, and exposure assessment to promote strong claim handling and improve claim decisions.
  • Support claim handlers throughout the lifecycle of complex claims, including investigation, evaluation, reserving, litigation management, and resolution strategy.
  • Develop core liability claim handlers through roundtables, one on one coaching, collaboration on claim and litigation strategy, and role modeling to strengthen technical competencies and enhance claims management performance.
  • Assess and communicate progress of claim handlers, including observation of readiness for more advanced claim handling roles.
  • Deliver feedback, training, and claims trend insights to improve team skillsets and consistency.
  • Partner with the Casualty Claims leadership to identify risk trends, operational opportunities, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in shaping claims handling strategies, policies, and standards across the casualty organization.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of casualty claims experience, including complex, high-severity, and litigated liability claims, management experience a plus
  • Demonstrated expertise in coverage analysis, investigation strategy, litigation management, and negotiation with high severity exposures
  • Strategic decision-making skills with a history of consistent quality, accurate reserving, and outcome optimization
  • Ability to influence without authority; strong communicator and collaborator, and ability to turn complex facts into clear direction
  • Proven ability to effectively coach, mentor, and influence claim handlers of varying experience levels
  • Executive presence with strong collaboration skills and the ability to operate effectively in a matrixed claims environment

Salary/Compensations

  • The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus (which could take the form of a general bonus, sales incentive, or short-term incentive), long-term incentive or spot recognition awards. The posted range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
