About the Role
New York Edge is seeking an experienced artist and carpenter to lead woodworking and applied STEM classes for youth in grades 6-12. This program focuses on teaching tangible life skills using traditional hand tools, bridging STEM concepts with physical creation, and fostering creativity, craftsmanship, and problem-solving in a safe and inclusive environment.
Responsibilities
- Teach or co-lead daily activities
- Build strong relationships with and among students
- Organize, lead, and promote interest in woodworking fields
- Follow safety plans and procedures
- Build and maintain safe environments for students using tools and small machinery
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff, school personnel and parents/guardians
- Establish goals for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' needs and interests
- Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants and demonstrate the use of materials and equipment
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be knowledgeable and skilled in carpentry and small-machine usage
- At least one year of instructing experience
- Experience working with children strongly preferred
- Must be in-person at work
