About the Role

New York Edge is seeking an experienced artist and carpenter to lead woodworking and applied STEM classes for youth in grades 6-12. This program focuses on teaching tangible life skills using traditional hand tools, bridging STEM concepts with physical creation, and fostering creativity, craftsmanship, and problem-solving in a safe and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Teach or co-lead daily activities
  • Build strong relationships with and among students
  • Organize, lead, and promote interest in woodworking fields
  • Follow safety plans and procedures
  • Build and maintain safe environments for students using tools and small machinery
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff, school personnel and parents/guardians
  • Establish goals for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' needs and interests
  • Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants and demonstrate the use of materials and equipment
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be knowledgeable and skilled in carpentry and small-machine usage
  • At least one year of instructing experience
  • Experience working with children strongly preferred
  • Must be in-person at work
