About the Role

The Deputy Voter Protection Director will organize statewide volunteer poll watching efforts, build strategic partnerships, and protect the vote during early voting, Election Day, and other voting process components. This role requires an experienced volunteer organizer passionate about defending democracy and creating meaningful change for Texas voters.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain strategic partnerships to protect the right to vote in coordination with Voter Protection leadership.
• Design engagement and volunteer pipelines and processes for voter protection engagement with partners and key stakeholders.
• Develop and manage poll watching components, including recruitment, training, assignments, credentialing, and communication.
• Manage Regionals/Associates, setting goals and supporting their achievement.
• Manage program data in Votebuilder/VAN’s MyCampaign, Google Sheets, and other systems, ensuring accuracy and cleanliness.
• Set up structures and technology for the poll watcher program, including Mobilize, VAN Virtual Phone Banks, a texting tool, and a proprietary poll watcher management database.
• Design materials and facilitate trainings for poll watchers to effectively identify, address, and report issues.
• Maintain strong volunteer communication and responsiveness.

Requirements

• At least two cycles of experience in an organizing role focused on volunteer recruitment and management.
• Proficiency with VAN’s MyCampaign, including experience creating lists and virtual phone banks, and general comfort with data and technology.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience presenting to or training medium-sized groups.
• Comfort with writing email newsletters or recruitment emails.
• Strong lens and judgment on issues of race and equity, with a sophisticated understanding of racial equity and structural racism as it relates to the work.
• Awareness of voter suppression’s disproportionate impact on marginalized communities.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours (nights and weekends) as Election Day approaches, and during Early Vote and Election Day operations.
• Experience with coalition building.
