About the Role
Simon & Schuster is modernizing its core systems using .NET and SQL solutions with an AI-assisted approach. This role involves replacing legacy batch programs with modern .NET services and SQL solutions, and eventually developing modern web front ends. AI tooling is central to the team's workflow, assisting with analysis, code generation, testing, and documentation, with an expectation that developers will critically review and refine AI-generated code.
Responsibilities
- Build modern replacements by implementing .NET worker services, APIs, and T-SQL stored procedures to replace legacy COBOL batch programs while preserving required business behavior.
- Review and refine AI-generated code, applying engineering judgment for correctness, edge cases, error handling, performance, and maintainability.
- Implement target architecture patterns including structured logging, run telemetry, configuration-driven behavior, parallel-run support, restartability, and clean integration contracts.
- Support validation and cutover by instrumenting replacements for reconciliation against legacy output and working with QA to drive packages to a clean validation gate.
- Resolve complex conversion issues by debugging behavioral differences between legacy and modern implementations.
- Develop and maintain modern web UI components as the program modernizes user-facing workflows.
- Contribute to engineering standards by capturing lessons learned, improving shared frameworks, and raising the quality bar.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional full-stack .NET development experience (C#, .NET 6+ preferred), including building and operating production services.
- Experience using AI tools to assist development (e.g., code generation, review, test generation, documentation) with the judgment to critically validate generated output.
- Strong SQL Server / T-SQL skills, including stored procedures, set-based logic, transactions, and query performance fundamentals.
- Back-end service experience, including background/worker services, scheduled or batch processing, structured logging, and configuration management.
- Front-end web development experience with ASP.NET Core (Razor/Blazor) or a JavaScript/TypeScript framework (React, Angular, or similar).
- Production mindset with experience owning code that runs unattended in production, including error handling, restartability, observability, and safe deployment practices.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, including reasoning about data-level differences between systems.
- Clear written communication skills for design notes, code review feedback, and operational documentation.
