About the Role
East Side House (ESH) is seeking a Student Advisor for the George Washington Young Adult Borough Center (YABC) program. This program serves high school students who need additional support to earn their diploma. The Student Advisor will enhance the school's academic component by offering support, career exploration, work preparation, skills development, and internships.
Responsibilities
- Be a primary person of contact for a caseload of approximately 60-70 students.
- Conduct daily attendance, academic, and social-emotional outreach via phone, remotely, or socially distant as needed.
- Conduct intake interviews with students and family members, potentially remotely.
- Refer students to academic and support services as needed.
- Consult with guidance counselors on student credit accumulation, graduation date, and post-secondary plans.
- Consult with teachers and provide feedback to students on academic performance.
- Maintain student charts and records to ensure milestones are being met.
- Attend administrative meetings, program trainings, and staff development, which may require virtual attendance.
- Meet with caseload in a group or individual setting to assist with academic, career, and personal goals, utilizing remote platforms or socially distanced methods.
- Conduct workshops, social-emotional groups, interest groups, or other groups for caseload.
- Educate students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing.
- Advise students and families through the college application process.
- Assist students and families in setting realistic aspirations and making informed choices.
- Guide students through FAFSA and college applications.
- Guide students through employment opportunities.
- Conduct informal counseling sessions for students to support their social-emotional development.
- Document all interactions with students on Salesforce, Google Suite, and other data systems.
- Participate in civic and community building efforts and activities as assigned via East Side House Community Development.
- Participate and help arrange field trips, special events, and extracurricular activities.
- Manage alumni events and data tracking.
- Manage social networks for the purpose of keeping in touch with alumni.
- Arrange and participate in special events, student-based projects, and extracurricular activities.
- Provide other program support functions as required.
- Maintain flexible hours and work days; some overnight trips required.
Requirements
- Minimum B.A/B.S.W. degree required.
- At least two years of youth services experience.
- Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and multi-task.
- Strong interpersonal skills and time management skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of community service/development.
- Knowledge and experience in WordPerfect/Microsoft Word/Google Suite, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other applications.
- Department of Education (DOE) clearance required.
- Minimal travel is expected, primarily for chaperoning trips and conducting home visits.
