About the Role
Base is seeking a Senior Manager of Field Quality to oversee fleet health, manage returns, identify root causes, and implement fixes in design and with suppliers. This role is crucial for gathering feedback on actual field failures, differentiating from reliability testing, and ensuring product improvements.
Responsibilities
- Own fleet return rate, setting targets and reporting metrics.
- Lead and grow the field quality, failure analysis, and test engineering team.
- Drive root cause analysis to closure, including field signal investigation, RMA triage, teardown, and corrective action verification.
- Make critical field decisions such as swaps, pulls, ship stops, and firmware mitigations.
- Implement design changes based on field failure data and evidence.
- Develop and maintain dashboards, failure taxonomies, and Pareto charts for tracking field issues.
- Collaborate with suppliers on corrective actions (8D/CAPA) and performance scorecards.
- Manage the Failure Analysis lab, including tooling and methods for failure recreation and fix confirmation.
- Oversee the cost of poor quality, including warranty spend, truck rolls, and scrap.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Physics, or a related field.
- 4+ years in field quality, failure analysis, or design engineering.
- 3+ years of experience leading engineers.
- Experience with field-deployed hardware at scale, including owning a fleet and driving failure modes to closure.
- Strong hardware fundamentals in electronics, battery systems, thermal systems, or complex electromechanical systems.
- Ability to triage issues and prioritize fixes based on data.
- Proficiency with Grafana, SQL/BigQuery, and Python for data analysis and system building.
- Experience driving supplier corrective actions and managing supplier performance.
- Judgment for high-stakes field decisions with financial implications.
- Ability to communicate complex technical risks to executives and debug technical issues with engineers.
