About the Role
We are seeking an Associate General Counsel to join our lean, high-impact legal team. This role requires wearing multiple hats and thriving in ambiguity, working across legal ethics, privacy, AI regulation, commercial contracts, and immigration. You will have significant ownership in shaping how the company approaches legal risk, vendor relationships, compliance programs, and internal workflows, with a blend of strategic impact and hands-on execution. You will work directly with founders and executives who value legal as a partner and have the autonomy to experiment with AI tools to reinvent legal work.
Responsibilities
- Take the lead on privacy and AI compliance, building frameworks for rapid movement without unnecessary risk.
- Stay updated on regulatory developments and translate legal requirements into practical guidance.
- Partner with product, engineering, and operations to embed compliance into workflows.
- Handle a wide range of commercial work, including reviewing vendor contracts, negotiating customer agreements, and advising on partnerships.
- Support M&A or fundraising activities when needed.
- Serve as the go-to lawyer for cross-functional teams, building trust and delivering practical advice.
- Experiment with AI tools to enhance legal team efficiency, such as automating repetitive tasks, streamlining contract review, or building knowledge bases.
- Help define the future of legal work at the company through AI experimentation.
Requirements
- 3-6 years of legal practice experience, potentially starting at a law firm and moving in-house or serving as GC/AGC at an early-stage company.
- Experience in legal ethics, employment law, commercial, and SAAS contracts.
- Hands-on experience with visa petitions, sponsorships, compliance audits, and global talent hiring.
- Understanding of AI and privacy law (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, CPRA, emerging AI regulations).
- Resourceful and commercial mindset.
- Ability to determine when to engage outside counsel and when to handle matters internally.
- Skill in assessing contract negotiation needs and identifying when a contract is acceptable as-is.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to focus on business-critical issues.
- Energized by variety and ambiguity, capable of managing multiple and competing priorities.
- Ability to work independently and figure things out without a perfectly defined role or extensive support.
- Detail-oriented and organized, balancing perfectionism with pragmatism.
- Comfortable making judgment calls and not paralyzed by the fear of making mistakes.
- Genuinely curious about AI and excited about experimenting with AI tools, contract review platforms, or workflow automation.
- Values impact over prestige and is motivated by building something meaningful at a growing company.
