About the Role
The Medical Assistant II is a healthcare professional who supports clinicians and other medical staff by performing clinical duties during the patient encounter. This role is patient-focused and dedicated to making a difference in improving patient health and quality of life.
Responsibilities
- Greeting patients, taking vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, assisting with medical procedures, collecting laboratory specimens, and conducting administrative tasks.
- Maintaining a clean, safe clinical environment and ensuring efficient unit operations while providing compassionate, high-quality patient care.
- Leading the training of new incoming staff members.
- Receiving and greeting every patient in person or via telephone in a courteous and friendly manner.
- Displaying ownership of the entire patient experience, including rooming of patients, collection of vitals, complete and accurate phone messages, chart preparation, medication refills, and abstracting external records.
- Raising emergent situations or expressed patient problems directly to RN, Supervising Nurse, or Practitioner for assistance.
- Entering charges for supplies and clinical testing.
- Assisting with routing forms to appropriate Bassett departments.
- Distributing AVS per patient communication preference.
- Performing all Point of Care testing as pertinent to specialty area.
- Running controls on point of care testing equipment and ensuring logbooks are updated appropriately.
- Performing clinical testing per departmental protocol.
- Cleaning and stocking exam rooms on a daily basis or according to need.
- Checking medications and supplies for outdates according to standards.
- Monitoring supply levels to improve inventory control.
- Meeting yearly competency requirements.
- Floating to other locations or departments as requested.
- Opening and/or closing clinic per departmental guidelines.
- Participating in monthly or quarterly environmental rounds.
- Attending required in-services.
- Exhibiting or recognizing areas of professional growth.
- Attending staff meetings, reviewing minutes of any meeting missed.
- Maintaining a thorough knowledge and understanding of Bassett policies and procedures as well as regulatory compliance.
- Taking a lead in service recovery and acting as a service liaison.
- Acting as a trainer for incoming new staff or providing orientation.
- Ensuring all orders have been pended in electronic medication record if necessary.
- Establishing and maintaining departmental record keeping.
- Performing audits using Tracers with AMP as assigned.
- Acting as a lead for checking inventory and ordering clinical supplies.
- Serving as a clinical competency validator.
- Conducting annual in services as requested.
- Serving in an organizational or unit-based committee.
- Completing 6 CE's per year.
- Performing similar or related duties as requested or directed.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience required.
- Customer service experience preferred.
- BLS certification required within 6 months of hire.
- Occasional balancing, climbing, crouching, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, stooping, fit testing.
- Frequent typing/clerical/dexterity, grasping, hearing, repetitive motion, seeing/monitor/computer use, standing, talking, visual acuity (color, depth, perception), walking.
- Occasional exposure to bodily fluids/bloodborne, burns, chemical, electrical, explosives, mechanical hazards.
- Occasional exposure to noise, vibration, wet and/or humid conditions, dust, fumes, gases, mists, odors.
- Occasional travel may be required.
