About the Role

The New York Times is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Publishing group's Starter Kit team. This team develops foundational shared libraries and UI components for applications built on Scoop, the company's CMS and publishing platform. The Engineering Manager will be a key technical and operational leader, collaborating with product, design, and newsroom partners to build solutions for editorial and internal customer workflows, leading a team of 5-6 engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, coach, and mentor a team of 5-6 mid- to staff level engineers, creating career development plans, providing feedback, and identifying growth opportunities.
  • Guide technical strategy with a tech lead and collaborate with partners to plan the product roadmap.
  • Oversee team processes, measurement, and delivery, assisting engineers with work breakdown, dependency identification, and roadblock removal.
  • Advocate for AI and Agentic development.
  • Maintain a high technical bar, guiding the team towards decisions that ensure product performance, security, observability, and quality.
  • Act as a liaison between the engineering team, partners, and stakeholders, ensuring the team understands business context and editorial goals.
  • Advocate for technical maintenance.
  • Cultivate a team culture built on trust, collaboration, and psychological safety.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and the company's mission.

Requirements

  • 1+ years as an Engineering Manager with people management responsibilities.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a software engineer with expertise in the modern frontend ecosystem (TypeScript/ES6+, HTML, and CSS).
  • Experience building applications on cloud computing platforms like AWS or GCP.
  • Experience planning a roadmap with cross-functional peers and managing execution and delivery.
