About the Role

The Peer Support Specialist is responsible for supporting and mentoring individuals in OMH Supportive Housing, Mobile Residential Support Team (MRST), and OMH Crisis Programs. The role focuses on helping individuals develop independent living goals, integrate into their communities, and manage their mental health services. Peer Support Specialists act as role models, utilizing their lived experience to enhance self-confidence, self-responsibility, and personal growth, while also managing crises and maintaining housing stability.

Responsibilities

Support and mentor individuals in OMH Supportive Housing, MRST, and OMH Crisis Programs.
Assist individuals in developing personal and meaningful independent living goals.
Support peers' transition between settings.
Serve as a role model and support others in enhancing self-confidence, self-responsibility, and personal growth.
Manage crisis situations and address areas of risk to maintain housing stability.
Treat each individual with dignity and respect.
Report possible violations of individual's rights promptly.
Complete and submit incident reports.
Ensure individual needs are met and intercede on their behalf.
Participate in incident investigations and maintain confidentiality.
Provide supportive services including accessing desired/needed services, teaching independent living skills, and building knowledge related to tenant responsibilities.
Visit individuals on a minimum monthly basis or more often as needed.
Provide consistent support during scheduled shifts for OMH Crisis Programs participants.
Assist individuals in developing personally relevant and culturally sensitive goals.
Utilize lived experience to provide support.
Participate in screening and intake processes.
Facilitate Needs Assessments and/or Rehabilitation Readiness assessments.
Serve as support and advocate in the admissions and discharges process.
Assist in the development of person-centered Support Plans.
Assist with the development of Relapse Prevention Plans and support individuals during crises.
Assist with developing and maintaining compatible living arrangements.
Access and provide referrals for needed services and assist in linkage.
Accompany individuals to appointments as needed.
Help in preparing forms, applications, and/or documents.
Act as a liaison between individuals, landlords, and treatment team members.
Follow OSHA regulations, including universal precautions.
Project a positive, professional image and establish positive working relationships.
Mediate emergency situations according to established policies and procedures.
Ensure timely communication of emergency situations.
Report all violations and/or accidents.
Ensure all required documentation is completed appropriately and in a timely manner.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Communicate in a respectful manner with all people.
Comply fully with confidentiality policies.
Meet all safety training requirements and adhere to safety policies.
Report any and all unsafe conditions.
Take measures to prevent accidents.
Coordinate, support, attend, and participate in all required events/meetings/reviews/committees.
Meet all job requirements and stay in compliance.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Related experience preferred.
NYS Peer Specialist Certification required.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
Willingness to work with individuals diagnosed with behavioral health symptoms.
Valid Driver’s License required.
Satisfy criteria to be a driver for the organization required.

In-person
Travel between locations within FREE Network is required.
For OMH Crisis Programs role is performed at one location however employee may be assigned as needed to alternate locations.
For OMH Supportive Housing and MRST, role is performed in the community, at person’s housing unit and other places in the community as agreed upon by individual and employee.
