About the Role
Performs a wide range of tasks to assist peers in regaining independence and mastering their recovery process, utilizing various recovery resources.
Responsibilities
- Assist clients in articulating personal goals for recovery through one-to-one and group sessions.
- Support clients in identifying and creating goals and developing recovery plans.
- Assist clients in working with their case manager or treatment team to determine steps for achieving goals and self-directed recovery.
- Assist clients in setting up and sustaining self-help groups and locating existing groups.
- Utilize tools such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) for individual wellness and recovery plans.
- Teach and engage in problem-solving techniques with individuals and groups, sharing personal experiences and recovery strategies.
- Use sessions to teach clients how to identify and combat negative self-talk and overcome fears.
- Support clients’ vocational choices, assist with job selection, and provide interview tips.
- Assist clients in building social skills in the community to enhance job acquisition and tenure.
- Assist clients in obtaining decent and affordable housing in integrated, independent environments.
- Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
- Serve as a recovery agent by providing and advocating for effective recovery-based services.
- Assist in obtaining services that suit individual recovery needs by providing names of staff, community resources, and groups.
- Inform clients about community and natural supports and how to use them in the recovery process.
- Assist clients in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy.
- Provide opportunities for clients to demonstrate how they have handled similar problems through role-playing/modeling.
- Develop treatment/recovery plans based on client goals with assistance from the Program Coordinator/Team Leader.
- Document client strengths, needs, abilities, recovery goals, and interventions on treatment/recovery plans.
- Maintain working knowledge of current trends in the mental health field.
- Share recovery materials and attend continuing education seminars and training.
Requirements
- Knowledge of the Recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes.
- Knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies to support individual clients in self-directed recovery.
- Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of mental illness and the ability to assist clients to address symptoms using strategies such as positive self-talk.
- Knowledge and skill sufficient to use community resources necessary for independent living and ability to teach those skills to other individuals with severe mental illness.
