About the Role

LifeWorks of Austin, TX is seeking a full-time Peer Support Specialist to join their community-based Peer Services team. This role utilizes lived experience and training to provide support and education through group facilitation, individual mentorship, and community collaboration, employing a trauma-informed, strength-based model to foster recovery and wellness.

Responsibilities

Provide client-centered, healing-centered peer support services to diverse individuals with potential challenges including chronic homelessness, systems involvement, mental health, substance use, or trauma history.
Promote recovery, resiliency, and accountability to enhance client quality of life, health, and wellness.
Establish safe, healthy relationships with clients through individual meetings to support problem-solving and community participation, making referrals and coordinating services as needed.
Facilitate support groups and social activities using program curricula, experiential activities, presentations, discussions, and skill-based activities.
Engage with individuals unfamiliar with LifeWorks services through outreach opportunities.
Develop and deliver recovery-related presentations and outreach on topics such as harm reduction, substance use, mental health promotion, trauma, recovery, community resources, relationship-building, and coping strategies.
Advocate for clients internally and within the community to ensure their needs are recognized and addressed.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with agency staff and community contacts, including referral sources and other service providers.
Maintain up-to-date online documentation of client services and contacts in the agency database, documenting client progress toward recovery goals.
Comply with all requirements from funding sources, licensure, accrediting bodies, the program, and the agency regarding data, paperwork, philosophies, processes, and procedures.
Provide additional recovery support duties, including transporting clients, resource navigation, and instrumental support.
Maintain approved non-clinical supervision and continuing education.
Utilize crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to assist clients in mental or emotional crisis.

Requirements

Requires a GED or HS Diploma.
Requires 2 years of related individual and group peer support experience.
Requires obtaining state certification as a Certified Peer Support Specialist (PSS).
Requires lived experience with trauma and substance use or mental health challenges.
Requires a record of maintaining own recovery over the past 2-year period.
Experience with databases.
Proficient level experience with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
