About the Role
This position is for a hands-on Field Service Technician who will support Rivian vehicle repairs. The role requires a collaborative, team-oriented individual capable of working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. While the role is based in a primary location, it may require operating remotely or traveling to various locations, including the production plant, to provide vehicle support as business needs demand. This job description outlines the full spectrum of skills required, and candidates will be assessed against this spectrum to determine the appropriate level for their expertise. This is a level-agnostic posting designed to recruit Technician candidates across various seniority levels in the organization; specific level availability fluctuates and is determined by current business needs.
Responsibilities
- Perform or assist with assigned vehicle diagnosis, repairs, installations, and inspections, whether at a service center or in the field directly at customer homes, businesses, or other convenient locations.
- Identify and explain the Rivian product line, EV framework, tools, and accessories.
- Utilize available technical resources to follow Rivian repair procedures efficiently without compromising quality or safety.
- Conduct road tests to ensure the quality of repairs.
- Manage necessary parts operations, including ordering, receiving, shipping, and inventory.
- Identify areas of improvement and provide feedback to senior technicians or leadership.
- Support service campaigns and containment initiatives.
- Ensure that all work and technical notes are properly documented for internal and external use.
- Work collaboratively with a team spirit and maintain high-quality work with minimal supervision.
- Communicate with a high level of professionalism in customer-facing situations.
- Stay current with technical skills and complete required training.
- This role may require regular interaction with customers and their families, 3rd party affiliates, and suppliers within Rivian facilities, on mobile service routes, or at community outreach events.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED is preferred.
- Proficient in using hand tools and power tools.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record, with no driving-related suspensions or revocations within a 3-5 year period.
- Ability to drive a non-commercial truck and trailer is preferred.
- Must be available for a 40-hour work week, which may include weekends, holidays, and shifts during early morning, evening, or overnight hours based on business needs.
- Proficient with laptops or computers in Windows or Mac environments.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and an eagerness to learn.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs., sitting, standing, walking, and frequent use of hands for grasping tools and data entry.
- Physical exertion may be required to perform occupational tasks (sitting, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, carrying, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 lbs.).
- Ability to read and speak fluent English.
- Ability to see, read and interpret documents such as governmental regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions or schematics.
Skills
- Foundational understanding of basic electricity theory
- Ability to safely use a DVOM for various circuit measurements
- Reading and leveraging electrical schematics as a diagnostic resource
- Deep understanding of automotive electronics, including CAN and LIN networks
- Ability to diagnose complex faults and perform wiring repairs according to manufacturer standards
- Understanding the risks involved with high voltage systems
- Ability to safely power down high voltage systems and work on them using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Understanding the function of various high voltage components and their monitoring systems
- Diagnosing complex high voltage faults related to charging, isolation, and interlock loop issues using the manufacturer’s diagnostic processes
- Proficient in fundamental chassis service
- Ability to mount and balance tires
- Perform vehicle alignments
- Replace brake system components
- Diagnose mechanical suspension components
- Repair advanced vehicle dynamic issues related to traction control, ABS, and power steering
- Resolving complex drivability concerns such as Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH)
- Service vehicle thermal systems
- Perform a coolant drain-and-fill
- Safely handle refrigerant with a 609 certification
- Comprehensive understanding of the A/C system and its components
- Proficiently use an A/C machine
- Diagnose a range of thermal system concerns, including issues with coolant systems, air conditioning performance, and HVAC systems
- Working knowledge of ADAS
- Basic understanding of ADAS features and their operation
- Replace ADAS system components
- Perform necessary ADAS calibrations
- Understanding the functionality and limitations of the complete ADAS system and the specific roles of its various sensors
- Assisting with glass removal and installation
- Safely replacing windshields and other glued body fixtures
- Adjusting body panels to specified tolerances
- Diagnosing and repairing issues such as wind noise and water leaks
