About the Role

Hyperlayer is seeking a Principal AI Engineer to reinvent how people and businesses move money by building the AI infrastructure for the future of payments. This role involves treating engineering tools as products, focusing on user experience and improving how engineering teams work day-to-day.

Responsibilities

Define and evolve how the engineering team builds software with AI coding agents, covering the entire lifecycle from spec to monitoring.
Horizon-scan and benchmark emerging open-source coding harnesses and open-weight models, introducing them with enterprise-grade controls.
Extend AI-assisted development into QA and DevOps, including automated test generation, code review, CI/CD, deployment, and production monitoring.
Build and refine the feedback loop for coding agents, using engineer satisfaction and outcome data to improve tools, prompts, and rules.
Own the steering rules, prompts, and guardrails for coding agents, ensuring human oversight on critical decisions.
Evaluate and select AI coding tools and frameworks, and establish internal benchmarks for these selections.
Participate in system-level design and architecture decisions.
Ensure AI systems scale, remain reliable, secure, and meet financial regulation objectives.
Mentor engineers on adopting new software-building methodologies.
Shape the future of engineering at Hyperlayer by influencing the roadmap with your approach to software development.

Requirements

8+ years of experience in software engineering, with recent hands-on experience adopting AI coding agents into a real engineering workflow.
Experience designing structured, spec-driven, or workflow-driven processes for AI-assisted development.
A track record of building internal tooling, evaluation frameworks, or benchmarks to improve engineering productivity or developer experience.
Experience benchmarking open-source tools or open-weight models against proprietary alternatives for safe enterprise adoption.
Comfort with cloud platforms (AWS mainly, GCP is a plus) and container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
Experience extending AI-assisted workflows into QA and DevOps.
Solid Python skills and comfort defining rules, prompts, and guardrails for agents and engineers.
A data-driven mindset, comfortable with instrumenting workflows, defining metrics, and using data for improvement.
Understanding of security, compliance, and audit implications of AI-assisted engineering in a regulated environment.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Curiosity and a love for experimentation in AI for engineering teams.
Contributions to or hands-on use of spec-driven or multi-phase development frameworks for AI coding agents.
Knowledge of evaluation frameworks and fine-tuning techniques.
Experience building or operating an analytics loop for a developer tool.
Familiarity with agent-to-agent or tool-integration protocols.
Experience running multiple coding agents or IDEs and defining consistent rules across them.
Experience running open-weight models in production or self-hosted environments and establishing governance.
Background applying AI agents to security scanning, dependency checks, or compliance gates within CI/CD.
Understanding of security and privacy in AI workflows.
Awareness of bias, safety, and human-in-the-loop considerations when deploying autonomous or semi-autonomous coding agents.
Must have an existing non-sponsored right to work in the UK.
