About the Role

Hyperlayer is seeking a Principal AI Engineer to lead the AI infrastructure development for a new payment platform. This role involves designing and building the agent layer from architecture to launch, shaping the future of AI in a complex, multi-function system.

Responsibilities

Design the agentic control plane for a new platform, covering agent authoring, deployment, governance, operation, and observation.
Define agent declaration and scoping, including registry, authority boundaries, autonomy levels, and tool bindings.
Own the evaluation and analytics layer for agent behavior, including trace capture, hallucination detection, containment measurement, cost accounting, and regression tracking.
Participate in system-level design and architecture decisions.
Ensure AI systems scale, remain reliable, and meet financial regulation objectives.
Collaborate with platform architecture and engineering leads to ensure cohesive system integration.
Shape the AI architecture for a platform under development, influencing agent behavior across the system.

Requirements

8+ years of experience in AI/ML or software engineering, with a focus on designing and shipping agentic systems into production.
Experience architecting agent governance for high-stakes domains, including guardrails, autonomy levels, kill switches, and human-in-the-loop approval.
Experience with agent runtimes, including sandboxing, isolation, tool invocation, multi-agent orchestration, and reasoning-loop control.
A track record of building or operating an evaluation and analytics harness for agent behavior.
Comfort with cloud platforms (AWS primarily, GCP is a plus) and container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
Experience designing systems that combine deterministic, rules-based processing with agent-based reasoning.
Solid Python and SQL skills, with hands-on experience with LLM or agent frameworks (e.g., LangChain).
Understanding of identity and authorization models extended to non-human/agent principals.
A data-driven mindset and ability to define key performance metrics for agents.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Curiosity and a passion for experimentation in AI integration.
