About the Role

We're looking for a Payment Operations hire to own the part of Outpost where the money actually moves. This is a quantitative role in an operational seat where you'll live in the transaction data to improve authorization rates and reduce costs. You won't be siloed, as payments at Outpost touches pricing, treasury, tax, and the product roadmap, and you'll be pulled into all of it. You'll work directly with the founding team and engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Run payment operations agentically, building systems to monitor approval rates, triage declines, assemble dispute evidence, chase reconciliation breaks, and draft processor follow-ups.
  • Design workflows, set guardrails, and audit agent performance.
  • Write playbooks for new processor onboarding, new market launch, incident response, and dispute handling.
  • Onboard new processors, banking partners, and local acquiring as new markets launch.
  • Own approval rates by market, processor, issuer, card type, and merchant, understanding the drivers of change.
  • Build and run routing logic to optimize payment flow.
  • Manage decline recovery strategies, including retry logic, network tokens, account updater, and 3DS.
  • Oversee chargeback operations and fraud strategy, setting thresholds and managing disputes.
  • Own the payment incident response path, identifying and resolving authorization drops.
  • Build full visibility into cost per transaction, including scheme fees, interchange, processor margin, and FX.
  • Manage day-to-day processor relationships, including performance reviews and pricing negotiations.
  • Model the trade-off between approval rate and cost by market.
  • Incorporate real payment economics into merchant pricing.
  • Manage settlement, reconciliation, and payouts, ensuring accuracy and resolving breaks.
  • Define reserve logic and settlement timing by merchant segment and risk profile.
  • Collaborate with treasury on funding, FX exposure, and cash timing.

Requirements

  • A STEM or quantitative degree is strongly preferred (mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, statistics, econometrics, or similar).
  • 3 to 7+ years in payment operations, payment analytics, or a data/analytics role that moved into payments, at a processor, acquirer, or high-volume fintech.
  • Strong analytical skills, including advanced Excel or Sheets and experience with BI tools.
  • Ability to build models and run analyses independently.
  • Ridiculous bias for action; you solve, you don't observe.
  • Analytically strong and commercially sharp; you quantify the opportunity before arguing for it.
  • Systems thinker who still does the work; you fix the transaction, then remove the reason it broke.
  • Strong EQ; processors, banks, and merchants all need managing.
  • Exceptionally hard working.
  • Fluent in ambiguity and chaos.
  • Curious and resourceful; you can figure anything out.
  • Clear, quantified achievements on your CV.
