About the Role
The Seniors Services and Long-Term Care Division supports Toronto seniors and residents in long-term care homes to have the healthiest, most fulfilling lives possible through exceptional care and services. CareTO is our brand for the culture change we are investing in for the City’s 10 directly operated long-term care homes. Responsibilities
- Receive, check, record, sort, store, issue, and retrieve food, cleaning, paper, and other supplies.
- Lift and carry items and maintain storage and work areas.
- Monitor and record temperatures of refrigerators and freezers, reporting and calibrating as needed.
- Check and document food for temperature, freshness, and correct diet.
- Utilize resident diet and food preference information.
- Rotate food using the FIFO method and inform supervisors of stock levels.
- Prepare food and beverages, including cleaning, chopping, mixing, portioning, and labeling.
- Fill steam tables and cook food using various methods.
- Load carts with dishes, utensils, containers, and trays for service.
- Deliver food supplies and food to dining, serving, and preparation areas.
- Collect, dispose of, or save leftovers and waste.
- Serve food according to portion control guidelines.
- Prepare dining areas by setting tables and delivering food.
- Assist in setting up and serving special functions.
- Clear tables and transport dirty dishes and equipment to the washing area.
- Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, appliances, and surfaces.
- Maintain and update contact information.
- Select and mix cleaning solutions according to WHMIS legislation and Health and Safety Codes, wearing PPE.
- Wash dishes, flatware, pots, and pans, ensuring appropriate temperatures.
- Sort and dispose of garbage according to recycling programs.
- Bag, remove, and transport garbage to disposal areas.
- Maintain garbage cans and bins in a clean and sanitary manner.
- Clean floors using appropriate methods.
- Notify supervisors of necessary maintenance repairs and unsafe conditions.
- Follow recipes, directions, and guidelines for food preparation.
- Record shortages and overages at mealtimes and properly store saved food items.
- Ensure area security by locking doors and windows.
- Attend staff, team, committee meetings, and in-service training.
- Answer telephone and take messages.
- Provide occasional assistance in monitoring client activities.
- Interact with residents/clients respectfully and supportively, providing information to appropriate staff for their well-being.
Requirements
- Bilingual in French and English.
- Completion of or current enrolment in the Food Services Worker certificate program or a post-secondary diploma/degree in Food/Nutrition Management.
- Cooks and Chefs must have a diploma from an established college or Red Seal Program status.
- Successful completion of a food handler/safety awareness program.
- Experience working in a food services environment.
- Experience preparing and/or serving food in a long-term care or other large-scale institution.
- Knowledge of Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Standards and ability to ensure compliance.
- Fundamental knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, the Sanitation Code, and related legislation.
- Ability to read and write and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with staff and residents.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to operate, lift, and move various equipment, supplies, and heavy items.
- Ability to perform various cleaning duties.
- Willingness to work weekends, shifts, and holidays as assigned.
- Ability and willingness to provide service that enhances dignity and respects resident diversity.
- Flexibility and adaptability in crisis situations, with potential for off-unit work on short notice.
- Ability to apply safe food handling practices to prevent food-borne illness.
- Ability to successfully complete a food handler training program and maintain a current Food Handler's Certificate.
- Ability to support Toronto Public Service values to ensure a culture that champions equity, diversity, and respectful workplaces.
