About the Role

Responsibilities

  • Assesses a company's risk profile and determines/negotiates appropriate pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions by analyzing financial documents, operations, management, and industry information.
  • Analyzes exposures to loss with technical expertise, develops adequate premium charges, and determines appropriate endorsements and exclusions.
  • Places reinsurance per department guidelines, utilizing various treaties, semi-automatic, and facultative reinsurance.
  • Achieves team production and loss ratio goals within assigned territory through sound marketing and continuous analysis of premium and loss results.
  • Handles moderately complex policy maintenance items and mid-term requests, reviews endorsement requests, and processes necessary changes.
  • Reviews claim activity and takes appropriate action.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with brokers to generate premium dollars and profitability.
  • Accompanies other underwriters to broker offices for marketing visits and entertains brokers to market services.
  • Participates in underwriting meetings with brokers, clients, and other underwriters, clarifying and questioning information to assess risk.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate studies with a focus in finance, accounting, economics, and/or risk management.
  • Typically 1 or more years of related experience as a D&O and/or E&O Underwriter.
  • Previous business or finance experience is helpful.
  • General knowledge of underwriting policies, practices, procedures, insurance law, and marketing principles.
  • Knowledge of financial documents, financial analysis, investments, and market conditions is essential.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and interpersonally with individuals at various levels.
  • Demonstrates effective negotiation skills.
  • Ability to analyze insurance risks to determine acceptability, including policy language, commercial rating plans, and methodologies.
  • Ability to apply/learn job-related computer software.
  • Ability to devise business solutions to problems, implement them, and monitor their effectiveness.
  • Ability to make decisions with supervision.
