About the Role

The Summer Nurse Intern is an unlicensed nursing student enrolled in a nursing program. Under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor, the student will perform clinical nursing skills and apply and document components of the nursing process appropriate for a student extern. This program aims to enhance self-confidence, communication, critical thinking, time-management, and clinical competence by reinforcing nursing fundamentals, theoretical knowledge, and awareness of the professional nurse's role and organizational operations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient treatments within the scope of unlicensed assistive personnel under RN supervision.
  • Obtains and records vital signs (excluding those related to blood administration) and collects specimens as directed by the RN.
  • Provides Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including toileting, hygiene, intake/output monitoring, meal serving, setup, and feeding.
  • Provides mobility activities such as range of motion exercises, transferring, and ambulating patients.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment in patient care areas.
  • Communicates patient needs to appropriate personnel and seeks assistance when necessary.
  • Responds to patient requests for assistance in a timely manner.
  • Reports patient needs and relevant patient care data to the RN.
  • Acquires knowledge and skills under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor.
  • Performs patient care and treatments.
  • Applies the nursing process to patient care situations and documents care delivered appropriately.
  • Follows Bassett Healthcare Network policies and procedures.
  • Follows standards related to patient safety.
  • Performs other duties as requested and observed by supervisor or manager.

Requirements

  • Nursing student enrolled in a college program, entering their second, third, or fourth year.
  • Current BLS from American Heart Association or another approved program at the start of the job.

  • Physical Requirements: Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 lbs. for force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
  • Typing/clerical/dexterity, repetitive motion, seeing/monitor/computer use, standing, stooping, tactical sense, talking, visual acuity and walking throughout the shift.
  • Occasional balancing, climbing, crouching, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching
  • Hazards: Bodily fluid/bloodborne exposure
  • Radiation/radiant energy
  • Working conditions: Occasional noise, vibration, wet and/or humid, odors.
  • Travel: The job may require travel from time-to-time, but not on a regular basis.

Experience Level

  • Previous experience in a health-related position or as a nursing assistant/patient care technician preferred

Education Level

  • Nursing student enrolled in a college program, entering their second, third, or fourth year

Salary/Compensations

  • USD $18.38/Hr.
