About the Role

Responsibilities

  • Performs blood specimen collection on adult and pediatric patients, including venous, capillary, and blood culture samples.
  • Orders laboratory tests in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Processes, files requisitions, and processes specimens for testing.
  • Prepares samples to be sent to reference laboratories for testing.
  • Processes test results referred to other reference laboratories.
  • Answers telephone inquiries as necessary.
  • Follows all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Identifies patients by verifying name, date of birth, and medical record number against Epic and/or paper requisition prior to specimen collection.
  • Performs routine/STAT phlebotomy after verifying patient identity.
  • Labels specimens in the presence of the patient.
  • Communicates with patients, explaining procedures, answering questions, and providing information while assuring confidentiality and handling health information per HIPAA regulations.
  • Collects appropriate and high-quality specimens for all ordered tests from all age groups.
  • Works efficiently, meeting draw standards and assisting coworkers when assigned work is complete.
  • Reviews specimens and requisitions to ensure appropriate specimen collection, quality, and labeling.
  • Validates specimen transport and receipt, completing incident reports for variances.
  • Completes all receiving steps following established Laboratory guidelines.
  • Receives batch and/or specimen in the LIS, entering required information.
  • Enters practitioner orders accurately for tests not yet in the LIS.
  • Delivers STAT, urgent, or other processed specimens in a timely manner.
  • Processes all specimens accurately, relabels and/or aliquots specimens, maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Delivers specimens performed within the lab promptly and prepares specimens for reference labs.
  • Assists with training of new staff as requested.
  • Completes responsibilities defined on the laboratory’s task lists.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within scope of practice.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1 year of experience in a similar capacity, preferred but not required.
  • CPT-A Phlebotomy Certification (CPT) from a formal phlebotomy program including a minimum of sixty (60) hours of didactic training and sixty (6) hours of clinical experience, or one hundred (100) observed phlebotomy draws, preferred.
  • Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
  • Occasional crouching, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping.
  • Frequent typing/clerical/dexterity, hearing, reaching, repetitive motion, seeing/monitor/computer use, standing, talking, visual acuity (color, depth, perception).
  • Constant walking, fit testing.
  • Frequent bodily fluids/bloodborne exposure.
  • Occasional Travel - The job may require travel from time- to-time, but not on a regular basis.

Salary/Compensations

  • USD $18.02/Hr. - USD $27.03/Hr.
