About the Role

Manage and oversee the logistical flow of surgical procedures within the operating room control room, ensuring efficient communication, coordination of surgical schedules, and resource allocation to facilitate optimal surgical operations.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and maintain the surgical schedule, ensuring timely preparation and readiness of operating rooms.
  • Establish and maintain good communication with patients, families/visitors, and hospital staff.
  • Report vital information to all levels of the healthcare team as needed.
  • Convey needed information to patients and visitors.
  • Maintain good communication with co-workers for proper team functioning.
  • Act as a liaison between surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and other departments to ensure seamless operations.
  • Provide clinical and service support to providers/healthcare team members and patients.
  • Establish and maintain an organized, functional work environment.
  • Track surgical progress and timelines, adjusting schedules as needed to optimize patient flow.
  • Answer telephone in a timely, courteous manner, and relay messages to appropriate personnel.
  • Perform and/or support unit-based audits.
  • Support interdepartmental patient flow process.
  • Address any issues that arise during surgeries, implementing solutions to maintain efficiency and patient safety.
  • Support workflow processes for providers and healthcare team members.
  • Perform patient service initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Nurse Manager to support adherence to unit budget.
  • Complete all unit-specific and department competency requirements.
  • Attend relevant educational and training programs.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and visitors.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of patient's information.
  • Direct/transport patients and visitors to the right location.
  • Keep patients and family members updated on delays and schedule changes.
  • Answer basic patient/family inquiries.
  • Order medical, paper, and dietary supplies as needed.
  • Assist with monitoring and allocation of supplies, equipment, and personnel, ensuring availability for all surgical procedures.
  • Coordinate with various departments to ensure proper flow of patients.
  • Perform similar or related duties as requested or directed.
  • Perform other duties as requested and observed by supervisor or manager.
  • Print daily OR schedule, patient stickers, and name bands.
  • Assist with the unit's admission processes for the pre-surgical/pre-procedural patient.
  • Prepare charts for the next day's cases.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year of previous experience in a health-related position, knowledge of medical terminology and scheduling patients.
  • Completion of 1 year of RN program can be substituted for experience.
  • Experience in an OR or surgical scheduling setting, preferred.
  • BLS or Heart Saver with AED must be obtained within 6 months from date of hire.
