About the Role

The Lab Operations Manager (LOM) will oversee the technical operations of the Biotech Incubator, maintaining core operations to meet tenant needs while ensuring safety and compliance with university policy. The LOM acts as a liaison between clients and university scientific core facilities.

Responsibilities

• Ensure tenants are properly trained, equipped, and certified for safe and compliant work.
• Oversee safe storage and disposal of hazardous and universal waste generated by tenants.
• Maintain awareness of tenant activities and ensure compliance with incubator policies, providing corrective direction when necessary.
• Coordinate maintenance and certification of shared equipment with university support departments and vendors.
• Manage equipment service agreements and provide procurement recommendations.
• Maintain inventory of basic consumables, process purchase orders, and manage records.
• Incorporate sustainability initiatives for environmentally friendly practices and materials.
• Assist with the on-boarding of new clients, including documentation, policy review, and introductions.
• Coordinate with university departments to ensure effective service delivery to tenants.
• Oversee the receiving and inspection of tenant packages.
• Participate in the selection and hiring process for technical staff.
• Collaborate on strategic plans and goals for the Biotech Incubator.
• Assist with budget management and cost-saving strategies.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, chemistry, or a related field.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of facility and/or operations management experience in an academic or commercial biotech laboratory setting, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 1 year of staff supervision of non-student roles.
• Strong knowledge of chemical and biological safety, and best practices for laboratory operations.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including good oral and written communication abilities.
• Ability to work independently and coordinate across various university colleagues, incubator tenants, and third-party vendors/service providers.
• Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
• Experience working with multiple capital and operating budgets.
• High attention to detail and the ability to supervise others.
• Proficiency in Excel, Word, and database-driven programs (e.g., Airtable).
