About the Role
We are seeking a lead software engineer to develop technology at the forefront of medical devices and precision surgery. You will be the foundation of our software organization, writing code, and serving as architect and manager as we grow. Working directly with the co-founders, you will design, develop, and test the software for our clinical prototype, focusing on robust infrastructure for hardware communication, high-performance data and image processing, and a compelling user interface. This role involves hands-on engineering challenges integrating biophysics, image processing, deep learning, novel electronics, ultrasound, and real-time signal processing within a multidisciplinary team. You will collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and research teams, as well as clinicians, to achieve clinical goals. The software you architect will be used in our first human procedures. You will also help define the company's foundational infrastructure, balancing prototyping velocity with regulated development concerns (IEC 62304, ISO 14971, ISO 13485) and setting policies for AI-assisted development.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and test the software at the heart of our clinical prototype.
- Coordinate communication between a number of hardware devices.
- Sustain high-performance data and image processing.
- Develop a compelling, responsive user interface.
- Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and research teams.
- Collaborate directly with clinicians to achieve fundamental clinical goals.
- Define the foundational infrastructure of the company.
- Judge what "just enough process" means at each stage.
- Trade off prototyping velocity with longer term regulated development concerns.
- Set policy for AI-assisted development.
Requirements
- 8+ years building complex systems software.
- Demonstrated ownership of the architecture of a multi-device, data-intensive, or real-time system.
- Strong individual contributor who has mentored or led engineers.
- Proficiency in Python.
- Depth in at least one systems language (C, C++, or Rust).
- Entrepreneurial, self-motivated, and independent.
- Excellent technical and analytical capability.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to work within and help build a regulated medical software quality system.
