About the Role

Haven Charter High School empowers students through hands-on learning in the health sciences, fostering critical thinking, civic responsibility, and the confidence to succeed in college, careers, and beyond. The Special Education Teacher / Generalist is responsible for designing and delivering rigorous, student-centered instruction that meets the diverse needs of all learners, including students with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Build strong, supportive relationships with adolescents, including students with diverse learning needs
  • Maintain effective classroom management while delivering high-quality, inclusive instruction
  • Plan and implement differentiated and specially designed instruction aligned to IEP goals
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to co-plan, co-teach, and modify curriculum and assessments
  • Ensure full implementation of IEPs, including accommodations, modifications, and mandated services, while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local special education regulations
  • Coordinate and communicate with district offices and external agencies to ensure timely delivery of mandated services, accurate reporting, and alignment with regulatory expectations
  • Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals and academic standards
  • Conduct ongoing assessments and use data to inform instruction, intervention, and progress monitoring
  • Create an organized, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment that supports all learners
  • Integrate technology intentionally to enhance accessibility, engagement, and learning outcomes
  • Support student behavior through restorative practices, behavior intervention plans (BIPs), and consistent implementation of school policies
  • Maintain accurate and compliant special education documentation, including IEPs, progress reports, and service logs, ensuring readiness for audits and reviews
  • Participate in IEP meetings, including annual reviews, reevaluations, and family conferences
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, colleagues, and district stakeholders regarding student progress and service needs
  • Collaborate with related service providers (e.g., speech, counseling, OT) to support whole-child development
  • Design and support interdisciplinary, project-based learning experiences aligned to health sciences pathways
  • Engage in ongoing self-reflection to improve instructional and inclusive practices
  • Participate in professional development aligned with special education best practices, compliance requirements, and school priorities
  • Attend and contribute to department, school, and family meetings
  • Contribute to the broader school community, including extracurricular activities, student programs, and school-wide initiatives
  • Participate in diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism professional learning opportunities

Requirements

  • Will be fingerprinted prior to employment by the New York City Department of Health and/or by the New York City Department of Education.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Facility with and willingness to learn education technologies
  • Experience working with adolescents in grades 9-12
  • Two years of teaching experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree with teaching experience
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • NYS 7-12 certified or in process preferred
