About the Role
The Custodian plays a critical role in maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, families, and visitors. This position supports the school's day-to-day operations through ongoing cleaning, waste removal, restroom maintenance, lunchroom support, and building preparation.
Responsibilities
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation throughout the school building during operating hours.
- Clean and service restrooms throughout the day, ensuring facilities remain sanitary, stocked, and fully operational.
- Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste appropriately.
- Monitor hallways, stairwells, common areas, offices, classrooms, and shared spaces to ensure cleanliness standards are maintained.
- Clean spills and address sanitation concerns promptly and safely.
- Support cleaning and sanitation efforts in accordance with health, safety, and public health regulations.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in lunchroom and dining areas throughout meal service periods.
- Assist with trash collection, waste disposal, table cleaning, and general upkeep during and after student lunch periods.
- Ensure common areas remain clean, organized, and welcoming throughout the school day.
- Respond to custodial needs that arise during school events, meetings, and special activities.
- Perform sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and general cleaning duties to prepare the building for the next school day.
- Assist with room setup, furniture movement, and event preparation as assigned.
- Report maintenance, repair, safety, and facility concerns to the Director of Facilities.
- Assist in maintaining custodial supplies, equipment, and inventory.
- Support seasonal cleaning projects and deep-cleaning efforts as needed.
- Maintain cleaning equipment in safe and operational condition.
- Follow all cleaning, sanitation, chemical handling, and workplace safety procedures.
- Utilize cleaning products and equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and safety regulations.
- Maintain professional conduct while working in a school environment.
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail.
- Interact respectfully with students, staff, families, vendors, and visitors.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality in all interactions.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Facilities or school leadership.
Requirements
- Minimum of two years of custodial, janitorial, facilities, or building maintenance experience preferred.
- Experience working in schools, educational facilities, healthcare settings, or other high-traffic environments preferred.
- Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, sanitation practices, and chemical handling procedures.
- Familiarity with workplace safety standards and cleaning regulations.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions in English.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, vendors, and supervisors.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities throughout the day.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain a professional demeanor.
- Employees must be cleared to work at Haven Charter High School.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.
- Department of Education (DOE) fingerprint clearance is required.
