About the Role
Under general supervision, performs routine loading and unloading of materials within a yard or worksite, and assembles load packages into trucks for delivery to customer job sites.
Responsibilities
- Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, trucks or customer vehicles.
- Installs strapping, bracing or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
- Performs load-building, determining appropriate weight, composition, and placement based on customer order and delivery vehicle capacity.
- Reads work orders or follows oral instructions to determine materials to be moved or loaded.
- Conveys materials to or from storage to designated areas using hand truck, electric dolly, forklift or other device.
- Opens containers, units, slings and loads using hand tools.
- Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on containers for correct identification.
- Observes all safety procedures and practices to prevent injury.
- Attends periodic safety meetings and may recommend changes to improve safety procedures.
Requirements
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and three (3) months experience performing these or similar tasks; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Forklift certification required.
Skills
- Forklift operator certification
- Knowledge of company products sufficient to take into account weight, shape and handling requirements
- Ability to read and write to handle work orders and labeling tasks
- Manual dexterity
- Ability to use simple hand tools
- Knowledge of safety procedures while performing forklift driving and materials handling tasks
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
- Ability to count items and verify against prepared lists.
