About the Role
Manages all aspects of underwriting operations, focusing on portfolio profitability, pricing, renewals, marketing, new business, staff development, and broker/client management. The role involves managing staff and an underwriting territory covering multiple business products and locations.
Responsibilities
- Execute departmental strategy and achieve P&L metrics, including verifying appropriate risk premium calculations for profitability.
- Manage client and broker relationships to identify cross-selling opportunities and ensure account retention.
- Manage insured and producer relationships across a large geographical territory.
- Maintain market visibility through effective marketing to insureds and brokers.
- Ensure client satisfaction by meeting their insurance requirements.
- Lead and develop a team of Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters.
- Oversee submissions, including applications, policy wording, inspection reports, loss runs, and financial reports.
- Control the timely implementation of new and renewed accounts according to quality standards.
- Review loss control reports and manage policy endorsement requests.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience in policy development and broker management.
- Proficiency in system functionality, including strong technical skills with Microsoft Office and other relevant systems.
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment with flexibility and innovation.
- Capacity to lead in accordance with AXA XL core values and culture.
- Ability to guide and influence others towards a strategic direction.
- Skill in planning for sales and business development, integrating techniques and tools for profitable business growth.
- Ability to plan, structure, and conduct negotiations with brokers and/or clients.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with brokers, clients, and colleagues.
- Understanding of the insurance industry and specific product portfolios.
- Ability to make underwriting decisions aligned with the business strategic plan and deliver results.
- Knowledge of financial targets and levers to achieve departmental business plans.
- Analytical skills to visualize, gather information, articulate, analyze, and solve complex problems for key business decisions.
