About the Role
As the Principal Software Engineer for the Credit Risk Profile Squad within Customer Data Services, you will play a key role in establishing a new service and building the APIs, data products, and engineering capabilities that support credit decisioning across the Bank. This is an opportunity to lead an AI-first squad from a strong existing foundation, using GenAI as a differentiator while also driving real-time streaming, platform modernization, and resilient delivery in a critical credit-risk data domain.
Responsibilities
- Lead a squad focused on building a cloud-based service domain with reusable APIs, data products, and event-driven capabilities.
- Partner closely with an Executive Product Manager to lead a team of engineers across Sydney and Bengaluru to deliver secure, resilient, and scalable outcomes.
- Define the engineering direction for the Credit Risk Profile squad, including target-state architecture, domain ownership, and technical roadmap.
- Establish reusable APIs and data products that support credit-risk decisioning across the Bank.
- Leverage CommBank's foundational GenAI tooling to create innovative, governed solutions for credit-risk use cases.
- Champion streaming-first engineering using Apache Flink and modern event-driven architecture patterns.
- Drive legacy asset modernization and migration into scalable, service-oriented platforms.
- Support the Crew Tech Lead by lifting engineering capability through technical leadership, coaching, and consistent engineering practices.
- Partner with product, architecture, and engineering teams to improve resilience, delivery flow, and customer outcomes, with clear ownership for operating the services the squad builds.
Requirements
- Highly technical engineering leader who combines deep expertise in distributed systems, data platforms, with expertise in modern software engineering and AI-enabled delivery.
- Led full-cycle engineering in a “you build it, you run it” environment, with experience designing, building, deploying, and operating software at scale.
- Deep technical expertise across distributed systems, data platforms, and streaming-first architecture, ideally including Apache Flink.
- Built or modernized microservice-based platforms using Java, Spring Boot, AWS, Kubernetes (EKS), and well-designed REST APIs.
- Comfortable contributing code while setting high standards for engineering practices, code quality, patterns, and architecture.
- Practical experience applying AI or GenAI in product, engineering, or decisioning environments, with sound judgment around governance, safety, and business value.
- Understand how to design and evolve service domains, reusable APIs, and data products in a structured, domain-led architecture.
- Can lead modernization and migration work across legacy and target-state platforms with clear ownership, risk awareness, and delivery discipline.
