About the Role

The Counselor provides support and assistance to clients at Progress programs, advocating for and responding to their treatment and rehabilitation needs within multi-level facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake interviews with prospective clients.
  • Orient new clients to the program and facility.
  • Respond to psychiatric and/or medical emergency situations and perform crisis intervention.
  • Assist clients in emergency evacuations.
  • Develop treatment plans with client participation.
  • Communicate with referral sources and other treatment personnel.
  • Complete intake and discharge paperwork and maintain client progress records.
  • Initiate and participate in discharge planning.
  • Lead or co-lead group sessions, including house meetings.
  • Assume primary case coordinating responsibilities for assigned clients.
  • Relay clinical and house-status information to other staff.
  • Monitor and record client medications.
  • Participate in meal planning, preparation, and join clients for meals.
  • Attend staff meetings, supervision sessions, and case consultation meetings.
  • Consult with leadership on case review, medications, and group dynamics.
  • Be responsible for the physical plant, including minor cleaning and repairs.
  • Report suspected abuse of clients to appropriate agencies.
  • Promote the social rehabilitation philosophy.
  • Work overnight, awake and alert shifts.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Inform leadership of any personal circumstances affecting job performance.
  • Lead and/or participate in outings and recreational activities.
  • Shop for groceries and household items with clients.
  • Drive clients to treatment-related destinations.
  • Attend programmatic and administrative meetings as a representative.

Requirements

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, clients, and other providers orally and in writing.
  • Must demonstrate good judgment and emotional stability.
  • Must be able to negotiate several flights of stairs multiple times during each work shift.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 20 lb. packages multiple times during the work shift.
  • Must demonstrate ongoing clearance with the California State Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division.
  • Must maintain training certification and demonstrated capacity to perform basic First Aid and CPR.
  • Basic word processing skills required.
  • Maintain computer requirements of the City and County of San Francisco Community Behavioral Health Services.
