About the Role

The Grossing Laboratory Technician I prepares, trims, and processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. This role requires meeting minimum production standards, accurately identifying and processing tissues per SOP, and producing legible grossing notes. The technician will also communicate with pathologists and lab staff, identify special handling cases, assist with equipment maintenance, and report technical/QC problems.

Responsibilities

  • Meet minimum production standards for department
  • Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues per SOP and related protocols while ensuring the utmost quality
  • Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code description that provide the Pathologist with a clear understanding of the sections taken
  • Communicate with and respond to Pathologists, transcription, and Lab Coordinator email communications
  • Identify problems and special handling cases
  • Trim tissue for specific re-gross requests when requested in a timely manner
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of various machines and equipment
  • Exercises judgment in evaluating and reporting results
  • Report any technical/QC problems to their lead tech or supervisor
  • Crosstrain and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab
  • Follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures
  • Maintains clean and organized work area
  • Restocks supplies as needed
  • Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation
  • Consult with senior peers on non-complex tasks to learn through experience
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Coursework in anatomy / physiology required
  • Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments
  • Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures
  • Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and Histology procedures and equipment
  • Attention to detail and organized with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Effective communication skills and ability to exchange accurate information
  • Proficiency in the English language which allows for participation in team meetings, accurate entry of data into company systems and understanding of written directions
  • Positive, can-do attitude
  • Utilize personal computer skills, including fast and accurate typing, to input data efficiently
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for up to 2 hours
  • Constantly operates a computer and other lab equipment accurately and efficiently
  • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
  • Required to lift, move, and carry up to 40 lbs
  • The ability to observe details at close range
  • Extended hours may be needed
  • Work under close to moderate supervision
  • Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards
