About the Role
Harvey is generating significant amounts of data across various sources, and there's a need for a central data platform to manage and utilize this data effectively. As an early hire on this team, you will build the systems that empower all teams at Harvey to work with data confidently and independently. This role focuses on creating frameworks, tooling, and reliable data paths, with an emphasis on ingestion, warehousing, transformation, and governance, while ensuring strict data sensitivity and residency requirements are met.
Responsibilities
- Own the data platform's architecture and technical direction, treating data infrastructure as a product with reusable frameworks and making build-vs-buy decisions.
- Build and operate the ingestion layer for streaming, batch, CDC, and third-party connectors, ensuring safe schema evolution and a streamlined onboarding process for new sources.
- Land data into Snowflake with predictable freshness, completeness, and cost characteristics, defining a clear handoff for Analytics Engineering.
- Own the orchestration platform, managing scheduling, retries, backfills, and dependencies across the data graph.
- Build transformation and compute frameworks, along with self-serve tooling, enabling product engineers and analysts to create pipelines using safe primitives.
- Design and operate stream processing infrastructure for real-time product features, operational alerting, and near-live reporting.
- Build the trust layer, including quality, observability, lineage, cataloging, and discovery, to ensure data trustworthiness and traceability.
- Develop patterns and tooling for handling PII and sensitive data, including classification, masking, retention, and access control, as well as multi-region residency requirements.
- Set the technical standard for data at Harvey through design reviews, standards, documentation, and mentorship as the team expands.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building and operating production data infrastructure, with ownership of systems used by other teams.
- Deep experience with cloud data warehouses, preferably Snowflake, including performance tuning and cost management.
- Hands-on experience building CDC and streaming pipelines using technologies like Kafka, Debezium, Flink, or Spark Streaming.
- Experience with managed ingestion tooling (Fivetran, Airbyte, or similar) and the judgment to decide between building and buying connectors.
- Strong fluency with workflow orchestration tools like Temporal, Airflow, or Dagster, operated at scale.
- Strong programming skills in Python and advanced SQL.
- Experience building frameworks or internal tooling for engineers, with a product instinct for effective abstractions.
- Practical experience with data quality, observability, and lineage tooling, and with schema evolution in systems requiring high availability.
- Working knowledge of data governance in a regulated environment, including PII classification, masking, access control, retention, and data residency.
- Familiarity with cloud data services (Azure, AWS, GCP), Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi).
- Comfort operating in ambiguous environments and defining scope where it doesn't exist.
