About the Role

This correspondent will reveal the economic implications of a warming planet, touching on energy and trade, shifting global economic alliances, and societal choices about resource allocation. The role involves investigating entities profiting from climate change and their influence on markets and policy. This is an opportunity to define a new beat from scratch.

Responsibilities

  • Report ahead of the curve and break news, identifying industries, regions, or asset classes facing a climate reckoning before it becomes obvious.
  • Write standout features using narratives and data to make abstract risk tangible.
  • Illuminate how climate risk moves through the economy, including insurance repricing, credit downgrades, corporate disclosures, agricultural futures, real estate valuations, and municipal bond markets.
  • Translate science into economic consequences, connecting climate models, weather data, and physical risk research to markets, prices, and policy.
  • Build a network of sources across insurance, agriculture, utilities, construction, banking, and academia.
  • Collaborate with Business, Real Estate, National, Weather, and other desks to produce ambitious work.
  • Think visually and work in different formats, including video and data visualization.
  • Explain complexity clearly for readers unfamiliar with specific markets.
  • Tell the big picture by connecting events and seeing the larger narrative in the United States and abroad.
  • Dig deep, follow the money, and illuminate hidden deals and decisions.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of reporting experience, ideally spanning business/economics journalism with some exposure to science, policy, or climate reporting.
  • Fluency in economics and markets, comfortable reading Fed statements and climate studies.
  • A track record of enterprise reporting and investigative work.
  • A fluid, clear, and vivid writing style with the ability to tell a story.
  • Demonstrated range, able to write daily news stories and long features with equal skill.
  • Experience with public records requests, financial disclosures, or regulatory filings as reporting tools.
  • Comfort with data, able to interrogate datasets and recognize stories in numbers.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
