About the Role
The Head Start Floater provides flexible support to classrooms, kitchen, and other program areas as needed to maintain smooth operations and high-quality services. This position assists with implementing educational activities, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting staff in various roles. The Floater adapts quickly to changing assignments while promoting positive interactions with children, families, and staff.
Responsibilities
- Assist teachers with classroom routines and activities.
- Support individual and small-group instruction.
- Supervise children to ensure safety.
- Engage children in meaningful and developmentally appropriate activities.
- Follow lesson plans and directions from lead teachers.
- Use positive behavior guidance techniques.
- Assist with meal preparation, serving, and cleanup.
- Support compliance with CACFP guidelines.
- Help maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen environment.
- Follow food safety and sanitation procedures.
- Serve meals in appropriate portions.
- Keep work areas organized and clean.
- Work cooperatively with teachers, cooks, and administrative staff.
- Adapt to various assignments and schedules.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding needs and concerns.
- Respond positively to schedule changes.
- Provide clear, respectful communication.
- Maintain a team-oriented attitude.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with Head Start policies.
- Attend training and professional development sessions.
- Demonstrate reliability and punctuality.
- Apply new skills learned in training.
- Exhibit professional conduct in all interactions.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Nutrition Coordinator/Center Director and/or management team.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; experience/coursework in early childhood education preferred.
- Experience working with young children in a classroom or childcare setting.
- Ability to adapt to varied roles and responsibilities.
- Ability to communicate in English both verbally and written.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain).
- Valid Texas ID/Driver License.
- Obtain Food Handlers Certificate (if applicable).
- Background clearance as required by state and federal regulations.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Frequent bending, standing, sitting on the floor, and active movement.
- Exposure to common childhood illness.
